Pussy VS Puppy
LASSIE: Let's put the queen (who originally, biologically speaking, was in fact a king) of movie dogs right up on top. Whether on the big screen or on her television series, Lassie showed generations of audiences the importance of having a good dog around, particularly if you're prone to falling into wells.
RIN TIN TIN: Although mostly forgotten, there was a time when this noble German shepherd was Hollywood's most popular performer. There were several Rin Tin Tins (the character continued into the 1950s), and the original "Rinty" was born in 1918, died in 1932 and made 29 films between 1922 and 1931. According to Hollywood lore, at one point the dog was making approximately $6,000 a week. That's a lot of chew toys.
BENJI: During the 1970s, this cute dog pound mutt was one of the most recognizable faces in America. Building off the success of the original 1974 dog-save-the-day family caper Benji , the scruffy dog became an industry unto itself and was featured in several films and television specials. Among the high points, carrying around the disembodied spirit of Chevy Chase in Oh Heavenly Dog (1980) and scuba diving (well, scuba dog paddling) on national TV.
OLD YELLER: There weren't many sequel opportunities open to the star of the 1957 Disney classic. Though the faithful yellow hound certainly embodied everything fine and noble about the family dog, an unfortunate plot twist and the desire to jerk some tears made Yeller a one-flick pony, er, doggy.
TERRY: Who is Terry? It's amazing that one of the most recognized dogs in film history, a dog whose career spans eight productive years and 13 films, isn't known by name and is, in fact, remembered for a single role
